MYTIME Young Carers: Championing the Invisible Heroes

Young carers often remain hidden away, quietly juggling the responsibilities of caring for loved ones while managing their own lives. MYTIME Young Carers, a dedicated UK Charity, is on a mission to change this narrative by providing essential support and opportunities to these remarkable individuals.

Who they are

MYTIME Young Carers focus on children and young adults aged 5 to 25 who provide care for family members. These young carers often face significant challenges, balancing their caregiving duties with education and personal development. MYTIME aims to empower them by offering resources and programs that address their unique needs.

What they do

The Charity runs several impactful initiatives. One initiative is known as the Memory Making Program. Young carers are provided with opportunities to participate in activities and retreats, offering them a much-needed break and a chance to connect with peers. Another initiative offered is the Employability Program. This is aimed at older young carers, which helps develop skills and confidence necessary for further education or entering the workforce. The last initiative is known as the Level-Up Program which collaborates with schools. MYTIME raises awareness about young carers and improves academic and emotional support systems for them.

Insights from the Study

A recent study highlighted by MYTIME underscores the significant impact of their work in local schools across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. These areas have become leaders in identifying hidden young carers, thanks to MYTIME’s efforts. The study emphasizes the importance of recognizing young individuals to effectively address their challenges and provide necessary support.

Key Findings:

  • Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole (BCP): Schools identified the highest percentage of young carers in England, with 1.9% in primary schools, 3.2% in secondary schools, and 5.5% in alternative provision schools – significantly above the national averages.
  • Dorset: Schools were among the top 10% in England for identifying young carers. Primary schools identified 0.6%, secondary schools 0.9%, and alternative providers 1.6% of pupils as young carers.
  • Isle of Wright: Secondary schools identified 1.9% of pupils as young carers, also placing them in the top 10% nationally.

The study reveals that prior training from MYTIME increased staff confidence in identifying young carers from 34% to 100% highlighting the effectiveness of their programs.
